Picture Story 1: Flooding in Pakistan

It is only the start of the monsoon season, but already Pakistan is experiencing some of the worst flooding it has seen in over 80 years. Entire villages have been washed away, an early estimate of over 1,600 deaths so far and over 2 million displaced or otherwise affected. Not only is the immediate water damage causing havoc, the floods have inundated crop-producing areas, dealing a crippling blow to the agricultural-based economy and threatening a food crisis. The Pakistani government now struggles to rescue and provide aid to millions – while still fighting with militant Islamist forces in many of the hardest-hit regions. With even more heavy rains predicted in the coming days, here are a handful of recent photographs of Pakistanis as they cope with this latest disaster.

Timeline

29 July: Floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains in north-west Pakistan cause rivers to burst their banks and entire villages of mud-brick houses are destroyed.

31 July: The UN describes the monsoon floods as the worst in living memory, while Pakistani authorities put the death toll at over 800.

2 August: Officials say the death toll has passed 1,100 as 30,000 troops join the rescue efforts.

4 August: The UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee launches an appeal for aid to help people hit by the flooding.

6 August: The UN says that at least 1,600 have been killed and 14 million people affected.

Comparing satellite images

Satellite images show how the Pakistan flood waters have swollen the lower Indus River, completely filling the river valley, when compared with images of the same area one year before.

The flow through the Sukkur Barrage has reached levels of 1.4m cubic feet per second (cusecs). The barrage is only designed to withstand a maximum of 0.9m cusecs.

Useful and handy information that you probably don’t know

Ants hate cucumbers. Keep the skin of cucumbers near the place or ant hole.

To rid the smell of fish from your hands : Wash your hands with a little apple vinegar.

To avoid tears while cutting onions : Chew gum.

To boil potatoes quickly : Skin one potato from one side only before boiling.

To boil eggs quickly : Add salt to the water and boil.

To remove ink from clothes : Put toothpaste on the ink spots generously and let it dry completely, then wash.

To skin sweet potatoes quickly : Soak in cold water immediately after boiling.

To get rid of mice or rats : sprinkle black pepper in places where you find mice or rats. They will run away.

FIFA World Cup 2010 Posters by ESPN for Each Team

To promote the World Cup, ESPN has made a poster for each team playing in the World Cup. Here’s every nation’s poster, ordered alphabeticaly.

ESPN have recently released their brilliant advertising campaign for this summer’s World Cup in the form of creatively designed artistic murals. 33 in total, all 32 nations are represented with the above placed South Africa World Cup mural to highlight what’s to come. Wolves howl in a South African dusk as the Algerian team celebrates a potential group stage victory over England or the US as a rabid nation looks on excitedly.

The MESSIah like Lionel Messi steams toward goal as a proud nation remembers earlier victories claiming the world title in ‘78 and ‘86. Can a once proud son lead La Albiceleste and the current best footballer on the planet to another title on 2010?

The Aussies made a good show of themselves in 2006 and will look to build upon that respectable performance when Tim Cahill and Co battle what looks to be one of the groups of death featuring Germany, Serbia and Ghana.

The once star of the national team looks to carry the weight of enormous expectations of Brazil and may even be celebrating a bit early. Hey, there’s even a bikini in the audience.

Samuel Eto’o and the rest of the lion-esque Cameroon squad will look to thrive on the fact they’ll be on their home continent come this June. The goal-scoring Eto’o has just come fresh of a treble winning domestic season with Inter Milan and will look to keep his good form with his country.

The Chileans are quick and will most likely play 3 at the back. They’ll be exciting to watch when they commit that many players forward. Their group stage clash with Spain is sure to delight.

Olsen’s Eleven, very clever take on the heist film. Martin Olsen and Denmark are a European side not to be underestimated. They finished first in their group ahead of Portugal, Sweden and Hungary. A group stage match up with fellow European representatives the Netherlands looks set to be a good one.

Rooney, Gerrard and the rest of the England players look to finally impress on the world stage and add another W next to the year 1966. 2010 may just be England’s best chance to “bring football home” with the brilliant Fabio Capello at the helm.

Will Les Bleus over-achieve like they did in 2006 or under-achieve like they did in 2002? Is Raymond Domenech really the right man to mold all that incredible French talent? We’ll soon find out.

What a photo. They’re now without their Captain and leader Michael Ballack, but one should never underestimate the mighty Germans. Calling on greats from Germany’s past, Ballack will hopefully pass on his leadership role to another as Germany looks for glory in South Africa.

Another vitally important player that will miss out because of injury, Michael Essien carries not only the flag, he carried Ghana’s best chance of making an important run in South Africa. Ghana will look to avenge their loss in the final of the 2010 African Cup of Nations to Egypt as they play their second major tournament on the continent this year.

Onward the Greeks! They figured out modern civilization and a way to win Euro 2004, can they figure out how to get out of their group this summer?

They may have erected a statue of American defender Jonathan Bornstein in Tegucigalpa, but the Hondurans didn’t get to South Africa by the head of Bornstein. Honduras have a difficult group stage run having to face Spain, Chile and Switzerland. They’ll want to represent their nation and CONCACAF well, but will need to be at their best.

Defending Champions are never easy to eliminate – just ask Inter Milan about Barcelona. The Italians aren’t being picked by many to repeat which could ultimately benefit the notoriously slow starting Europeans. They’d love nothing more than to fly under the radar to the quarter and semi finals only to shut down the opposition en route to another final.

Cote d’ Ivoire led by the brilliant Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and the brothers Toure are another African nation that will look to impress with former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson at the helm. They’ll attack with purpose and defend bravely. Surely a dark horse for many making predictions.

One of my favorite murals from the lot of them, this brilliant depiction of a classic Japanese striker-samurai shredding and slicing through rival nations while continuing to hold up the ball is a treat.

El Tri will look to build upon the turn around of sorts they enjoyed when current boss Javier Aguirre took over from the lackluster Swed Sven-Goran Ekirsson. They also came out on the short end of a meeting with England but impressed with their speed and passing abilities.

The flying Dutchmen anyone? Many a football fans second favorite team, the Dutch always play their positive brand of attacking football and could be a favorite to win the title if they can avoid a classic meltdown in later stages.

The lone qualifier from Oceania, New Zealand will face three difficult group stage matches and will be facing a miracle if they advance. Great photo though.

The fantastic Super Eagles will look to soar high above their opponents led by Obafemi Martins, the experienced Kanu, and Mikel John Obi. Like the other African nations competing, Nigeria have the advantage of playing together as a team in the 2010 African Cup of Nations earlier this year where they made the semi final.

If Cape Verde can hold fellow group G participants Portugal to a 0-0 draw, you better believe the organized and defensively minded North Koreans can do the same. On paper, they should exit the group stages with 0 points, but don’t underestimate North Korea being difficult to break down.

They finished ahead of Argentina in the difficult CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying group which proves Paraguay possess some quality. Led by Nelson Valdez, Paraguay will be a strong South American team that should progress out of group F with Italy.

There seems to be some questions surrounding this Portugal team as they enter into June. One doesn’t get a sense of confidence when watching them especially after leaving qualifying late. Still though, with players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, Portugal can’t be over-looked and are always dangerous.

Serbia posses a strong starting eleven featuring the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Neven Subotic and Dejan Stankovic. They’re big, strong and will look to avenge their first round exit from 2006.

Having qualified for their first finals, Slovakia will face Italy and Paraguay in the group stages. Their best chance for a meaningful result will be when they clash against New Zealand. Looks cold.

If I’m not mistaken, Switzerland didn’t concede a single goal last time out, yet they failed to progress out of the group stages. Can the Swiss bolster their defensive squad with a little flair and some goals in 2010?

Uruguay are one of only seven nations to actually win the Cup when they did it first time out in 1930 and proved it was no fluke by accomplishing it again in 1950. Having fallen a long way since those glory days, Uruguay haven’t progressed to the round of 16 since 1990 and failed to even qualify in 2006.

Depicting a dramatic scene from the Revolutionary War when the USA defeated the British, the Yanks will hope to defeat them, well at least the English, when they face England in one of the most important opening group stage matches the USA has ever played. Many will be watching.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a 20th century politician and statesman, is generally regarded as the founder of Pakistan. He served as leader of The Muslim League and Pakistan’s first Governor-General. He is officially known in Pakistan as Quaid-e-Azam “Great Leader”) and Baba-e-Qaum (”Father of the Nation”). His birthday is a national holiday in Pakistan. Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress initially expounding ideas of Hindu-Muslim unity and helping shape the 1916 Lucknow Pact between the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress; he also became a key leader in the All India Home Rule League. He proposed a fourteen-point constitutional reform plan to safeguard the political rights of Muslims in a self-governing India.

Report Suggests Pakistani Envoy In Washington Has Issued 360 Visas To Americans In One Month Without Consulting Islamabad

Blackwater USA is looking for mercenaries fluent in Urdu, Pakistan’s national language, and Punjabi, the language spoken by natives of Pakistan’s largest populated province. The US military already deploys officers and commando units manned by people fluent in Pashto, spoken in most of western Pakistan and southern Afghanistan. Keeping in view the denials of the US embassy in Islamabad and the expanding American presence on Pakistani soil, these recruitments are obviously not meant for running call centers. Since Washington has unilaterally decided that Pakistan is now a ‘war theater’ after Iraq and Afghanistan, it is only natural that American terrorism will also be unleashed in Pakistan. Blackwater is in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Blackwater USA has concealed its Web presence. If you type www.BlackwaterUSA.com, you will be redirected to the website of an organization called U.S. Training Center , which offers military and personal security courses. The website does not overtly say or indicate it is linked to Blackwater, but on Sept. 12 a media release was posted on the homepage defending Blackwater against accusations the private ‘army’ overbilled the US government for work in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.

The bigger news, however, is that ‘Blackwater USA’ is hiring in Pakistan. While BlackwaterUSA.com does not exist on the Web any longer, I 3an employment form on a secured page of the private security firm’s website that clearly indicates the private mercenary army is hiring Urdu- and Punjabi-speaking agents. This would complement the existing Pashto-speaking agents that both Blackwater private mercenary army and its employer, the US military, have on the ground in Afghanistan and – as reports increasingly indicate – in Pakistan.

Snapshots of the screen from the page titled secure.blackwaterusa.com show that the page is part of the Blackwater Employee and Applicant Resource System (BEARS).

The snapshots shown here indicate that hiring continues as we speak for agents and for people with military training who can speak Urdu, Pakistan’s national language, and Punjabi, spoken by the natives of Pakistan’s largest populated province.

Obviously, agents with proficiency in the two languages will be operating in and around Pakistan since there is little utility for such agents anywhere else in the world.

This is the latest in a pile of circumstantial evidence that supports the growing concerns within the Pakistani public opinion that private US security firms are setting up shop in Pakistan, bringing to the country the same mayhem that has engulfed Iraq and Afghanistan, possibly with the permission of influential people in the Pakistani government.

A petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan today requesting that the government of Pakistan be ordered to explain why the US embassy in Islamabad is building a fortified embassy the size of an international airport, spread over 52 to 54 acres. The petitioner, who is a private Pakistani citizen, has accused the United States of constructing a military base in the heart of the Pakistani capital in the guise of an embassy.

On Aug. 5, PakNationalists/AhmedQuraishi.com broke the news of how a Washington-incorporated private company that calls itself an NGO and executes contractual humanitarian work for the US government in conflict zones is suspected of acting as cover for Blackwater in Peshawar.

On Jul. 27, the Deutsche Presse-Agentur [DPA] reported that residents of an upscale suburb in Peshawar have formally complained to the Pakistani government that armed private Americans were spreading fear in the area.

We also received a statement issued by Mr. Richard Snelsire, the spokesman for the US embassy in Islamabad, denying these reports:

Since 2002, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed more than $3.4 billion in humanitarian and development assistance to the people of Pakistan in relief, health, education, and economic development programs.

Creative Associates is one of many organizations USAID engages to deliver this assistance, which also includes the Government of Pakistan, local non-governmental, and international humanitarian institutions. This organization has no link to any international security firm, nor is it affiliated in any way with an intelligence service.

Recent allegations against USAID partners such as Creative Associates are false, and place individuals delivering humanitarian and development assistance to the people of Pakistan at risk.

Despite these denials, the Pakistani government and the US embassy are unable to explain several incidents in Peshawar and Islamabad over the past few weeks that involved privately armed American citizens, especially accounts by private citizens confirming they have seen and interacted with these foreign agents in public places. In at least three incidents, these privately armed Americans were released by police authorities under pressure from the government despite involvement in altercations with local Pakistanis. In one case, an armed US citizen physically assaulted a Pakistani police officer and uttered obscenities against the host country.

The alarming part of this story is that the embassy of Pakistan in Washington is reported to have issued several hundred entry permits and visas to individuals without seeking clearance from the country’s security departments. In one recent report, it is reported that the Pakistani ambassador issued 360 visas to US citizens in one month, sometime this year, from the ambassador’s discretionary quota of visas and again without clearance from Pakistani security departments.

Who are these Americans who are arriving in Pakistan in the tens and hundreds at a time when the US embassy in Islamabad follows a strange practice where a staffer personally calls any US citizen in the United States in order to warn them about coming to Pakistan for personal reasons or pleasure, apparently because of the security situation?
